I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Brussels recently with my very own local tour guide. I had only been to Belgium once before, to the Medieval city of Bruges, but had found the country to be inviting and the architecture exquisite. Brussels only cemented that opinion of Belgium and furthered my appreciation for the culture and everything the country has to offer.
A local friend showed me around the sites and gave me a great tour of the city. I’ve been lucky while living in Europe to make friends in fabulous places. We did tour many of the tourist locations but I had new perspective on them, and most importantly was taken to a square in the city where all the famous Chocolate Houses are located. Her unique spin on giving me a tour in Brussels was to having a tasting tour of Grote Zavel – buying chocolate from each of the Chocolate Houses there and figuring out which was my favorite (Neuhaus).
We were able to visit many sites, including:
- Brussels Stock Exchange
- Grand Place
- Several of the Comic Book Murals
- Manneken Pis (the Peeing Man)
- Grote Zavel
- Cathedral of St. Michael & St. Gadula
- Brussels Park
- Palais Royale des Bruxelles
- Atomium
- Site of the 1958 World Expo
